Bottles for cosmetics

A bottle is the narrow-neck cylindrical pack used for products that pour, such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion and toner. The narrow neck controls flow and reduces waste. It is the largest category in the archive, with over 520 options ranging from travel sizes to litre sizes.

Choosing a bottle comes down to three axes: material, neck and finish. Material drives formula compatibility and light barrier. The neck determines which valve, flip top or pump will fit, and it is the detail that most often delays a project when left for later. Finish (clear, pearlised, matte) answers to brand positioning and to how much the active needs protecting.

How to choose

Start with the closure the formula needs: flip top for runny shampoo, disc top for conditioner and thicker cream, pump for lotion. Then choose the bottle with that closure's neck finish, and check the quick facts for the most common finishes in the archive. Next, the material: HDPE is opaque, squeezable and resists surfactants; PET is clear and rigid, good for showing the product. Finally, match volume to use: daily bath products take larger sizes, travel and samples the smallest.

Frequently asked questions

HDPE or PET for shampoo?

Both work with most shampoos. HDPE is opaque and flexible, so the bottle can be squeezed, which helps with thicker formulas and protects from light. PET is clear and rigid, the choice when colour or shine is part of the appeal. A very alkaline formula or one with a strong solvent needs a compatibility test before the batch, in either material.

Flip top or disc top: which cap should the bottle use?

A flip top opens a hinged lid revealing an orifice, which doses runny products such as shampoo and liquid soap well. A disc top opens by pressing one side of the disc, one-handed, and usually has a larger orifice suited to conditioner and thicker lotion. Both exist in the most common neck finishes, such as 24/410 and 28/410, so the choice does not force a bottle change.

Does a clear bottle protect the formula from light?

No. A clear bottle lets through the light that degrades colourants, fragrance and some actives. If the formula is sensitive, the options are an opaque or pearlised material, amber glass, a label covering most of the body or a protection system in the formula itself. A light stability test confirms which route is enough.

Can I use the same bottle for different formulas in the range?

Yes, and it is common: shampoo, conditioner and lotion from one range share the bottle and change only the closure and label. That simplifies purchasing and stock. The care point is validating each formula against the material and checking that every closure chosen uses the same neck finish.

Is there a minimum run to manufacture my product with this packaging?

Yes, and it varies by part. Because Private develops and manufactures the finished product, the project minimum takes the formula and the packaging into account together. Stock packaging in a standard colour and finish allows smaller runs. A custom colour, decoration such as screen printing or hot stamping, and a dedicated mould raise the minimum, because they require production set-up. The technical review comes back with the minimum for each option you selected, together with lead time and alternatives.
